Sound can separate the amateurs from the pros in filmmaking.

Having the right sound — whether you’re working on corporate, documentaries, or fiction films — is an important part of making a professional finished piece.

Getting the right sound is not as easy as it seems, either. There are countless times where sound has been the trickiest part of making a movie for me:

Critical equipment got lost at the airport. Someone sliced the only audio jack on set. A connection wasn’t correct. The mic got muffled. Batteries died. We forgot to record room tone. Background noise and echoes couldn’t be controlled. The list goes on…

Whew, all of that happened just during production, too. These were painful lessons to learn.

Now I’m obsessed with getting high quality sound and work it into every stage of production. I’ve changed my approach to make sure it can happen, too. I’m so grateful to know how to make better decisions about sound, and I would love to share that with my fellow emerging filmmakers.

This is why I’m so excited about the upcoming Sound Advice Tour with Oscar winning instructor Frank Serafine. The one-day workshop is happening in Charlotte, N.C., on Saturday, June 20th. It’s a great way to improve your craft and gain a better understanding how to tackle sound on your next film.

Here’s more information about the instructor via MZed:

Frank Serafine is best known for his work as a Hollywood Supervising Sound Editor / Designer on Hollywood blockbusters, including Star Trek, Tron, and many more. He won an Emmy for Sound Design on The Day After and an Oscar for Sound Design on The Hunt for Red October.

He has worked on TV episodes such as Baywatch, and has designed sound for hundreds of commercials, including Chrysler, CBS, FOX, Energizer, Mercedes, and Maserati. Frank supervised the audio production, acoustic design and construction installations for several ride films and interactive themed attractions with Six Flags, Busch Gardens, Ford Museum, Disney, Epcot Center, Marvel, Universal, and Sony, and his game credits include TRON and Grand Theft Auto. He has created sound effects libraries that are used by filmmakers and editors worldwide. In addition to his professional sound design work, Frank is also a composer, electronic keyboard musician, and flutist.

Join one of the legends who created what sound is in media today, and learn how to produce the best sound possible with the most advanced techniques and latest equipment and available. You will learn how to optimize your audio for every format, from surround theaters, to indie films, to audio for the web and smartphones.

This one-day workshop with a working sound pro is produced by MZed, the company that brought the Illumination Experience with Shane Hurlbut and Directing Motion with Vincent Laforet to North Carolina last year. The workshops were incredibly helpful and I’m beyond grateful to have gone through them.

Even if you’re not interested in becoming a sound professional, this workshop will help you better understand the process your team goes through. That’s always helpful.

I seek a better understanding what my crew is going through — how they think, what they pay attention to, and the challenges they face — so I can give them what they need to succeed. Most of the folks I know want to do their best work; I don’t want to be a hinderance.

Learning is always more fun with friends so please join me. I’d love to see you there!
