Last weekend was the 2024 Southern Documentary Fund Convening held in Durham, N.C., at The Fruit.
It has been a long time since I have been able to see my fellow filmmakers. I proved to be rusty at saying hi and talking about my newest project. I was lucky to see a few familiar faces at Longleaf in May and it has been really lovely to be back among artists, programmers, and industry professionals again. Plus, I had the sweet luck of making some new friends. I have sincerely missed connecting with everyone because of the pandemic (among other things).
My brain is a bit fried because the convening followed an intense month of filming, photo shoots, and family stuff. The end of school alone was enough to make my mind melt. Putting that in the middle of all of these film events means I can hardly form a cohesive sentence. So, thank you to all of the people who were gracious enough to me while I “buffered” in real time, haha.
The convening comes at a pretty good time for our film, though. We’ve been filming and I’ve started editing a work sample for our next round of fundraising. That means I’m updating our business plan and pitch deck at the same time. I’m also obsessing over our distribution and impact plans. There’s a lot of work ahead. I’m grateful to feel inspired, if not really ready for some rest. It really was a lovely weekend.
Thank you to SDF and everyone who made it happen.
