Editing is something I complete loathe and totally love. How’s that possible? Who knows.
This weekend, while organizing some footage, I cause myself a few problems. My over-organizing tendencies meant that my Adobe Premiere project was totally jacked up when I went back to editing. My video files weren’t in the same place and so I had a ton of “Media Offline” notices. Those things are RED and so mean.
Media going offline is something I ran into while working on my previous films. I had no trouble figuring out the solution in FCP. But I’ve been slowly switching to Premiere within the past year or two, so I felt like the project was totally buggered.
Thankfully this thing called YouTube exists. And it’s full of smart, creative people willing to share their know-how. Hooray!
Here’s the solution:
The secret is to organize the footage BEFORE you do any editing of it. If you need preliminary edits, consider them disposable or make copies of footage to organize rather than alter filenames of the original, etc.
(Of course, that’s all easy to say, not always easy to do.)
Great advice, Jim! We needed a rough cut of sample footage to share quickly. I’ll have a friend help organize everything moving forward, though. It’ll make a HUGE difference! I thought of you while organizing the clips today. 🙂
