Earlier this year HuffPost Live hosted a conversation titled “Grow Up, Documentaries” featuring several guests. Even though this is from March 2013 (which is eons ago in Internet age), it’s definitely worth a listen. It’s an interesting conversation with links to relevant articles. Something I always appreciate.
Here’s the description they use for the piece:
Do documentaries get a pass for bland movie making because they have a message? If docs want a seat at the big boys table, shouldn’t they respect the art of cinema?
I, for one, am always seeking improvements in my storytelling techniques. It’s not enough to have a good story. I want to tell that story really well. I want to create a surprising, interesting, and educational documentary that also entertains audiences. I’m constantly learning and striving to improve … but that’s just me.
Watch the video let me know what you think of it. What do you expect before you watch a doc? How do you feel about documentaries that are bad or bland?
