Last weekend I drove up to D.C. to attend the AFI Docs Film Festival. My first film of the morning was Life According to Sam. It’s an incredible film about an inspirational family fighting to find a cure for a rare disease known as progeria. I wanted to hug everyone associated with the film afterwards. It was so well done.
Here’s the description of the documentary from AFI Docs:
Progeria is an extremely rare and fatal disease in which children suffer the afflictions of accelerated aging. Sam Berns is one such child who opens up his life to Academy Award®-winning filmmakers Sean Fine and Andrea Nix Fine (INOCENTE, WAR/DANCE) with remarkable grace and courage. Meanwhile, Sam’s devoted physician parents work tirelessly in the face of great adversity to find a way to help their son and children all over the world combat the deadly disease. – AP
If you missed it on Saturday, Life According to Sam is screening at AFI Docs again at 11:00 am on June 24, 2013, as the Best of the Fest screenings. It’ll also be on HBO sometime soon. You can also learn more about progeria through the Progeria Research Foundation (@progeria).
