If you know me well, you know that I love, love, love coffee. You also know that I didn’t start drinking it until after college. And I didn’t start drinking REALLY GREAT coffee until about a few years ago. And you know that I have been totally hooked on it ever since.
Drinking coffee is more than ritual. It’s more than caffeine. It’s more than the great taste. It’s my selfish indulgence that gets me motivated and keeps me focused. It’s my thing.
I don’t talk about it much because, well, that kinda ruins it. By making it public, talking about it too much, or having too much of a good thing — the fun gets totally ruined. It makes you remember that there’s a Starbucks on every corner for good reason: everyone else in the world loves good coffee, too. If that’s the case, then it’s no longer my thing, you know?
So why spend all that time talking about how I don’t want to talk about it just to talk about it now? Great question. I’ll tell ya.
It’s because I’m giving up coffee for a while. Whaaaa? Yeah, can you believe it? I haven’t had coffee in about a week now, and I want to see how long that’ll last. I have my reasons:
- It’s an easy way to cut calories.
- I want to lose weight quickly so I can feel prettier when I get hitched.
- Not drinking coffee makes me drink even more water, which makes for prettier skin.
- It’s an easy way to save money on a daily basis, even if it’s just a few bucks.
- I was relying on it entirely too much.
Every now and then I experiment with something like this to see how it works out. I love experiments. And challenging myself a little bit every now and then. I’m not strong enough to do this long-term, but if I could cut it out for a month — I’ll celebrate gloriously soon enough.
Camden,
Good luck! If/when you do come back to coffee let me suggest a few things as an aficionado:
1) Skip Starbucks altogether. They consistently burn their beans, have baristas who are trained only to push a button on a machine (while smiling), and they take a little coffee and drown it in your choice of gigantic sugar and calorie laden drinks. Unfortunately they have become the mcDonalds of coffee.
2) Switch to a tradtional Macchiato or Espresso. If you drink milk-based coffee drinks (Latte, cappuccino) changing to a Macchiato means you are getting Esprsso, marked with only a tiny bit of milk. I find these to be rich and chocolatety and at less than 40 calories, you can go wrong.
3) If you are brewing coffee at home, buy a Chemex or pour-over dripper. Your coffee by the cup poured by hand will taste so much better and you’ll never go back! (These make great wedding gifts, too!)
Congrats again on your wedding, and good luck on the coffee!!
Josh, thanks for the tips! I’ll scope it out after the hiatus ends. I love great coffee! Enjoy a cup for me, eh?! 🙂
