You think this guy lacks confidence? Hah. Yeah, right.

You think this guy lacks confidence? Hah. Yeah, right.

Who comes to mind when you think of confidence? Is it a director with an intense stare? A politician in a suit, smiling from the podium? Or an actor walking the red carpet?

Do you think they got that confident overnight? Probably not. Then how did they do it?

You can fake confidence. Eventually everyone will believe it (including you) and then that confidence becomes real. I’ve been doing it for years. That’s one way to do it.

The best way to gain confidence is through action.

Want to become a director? Then direct. Repeatedly. The more you do it, the more comfortable you’ll get. I’ve been doing that for years, too. It works.

Confidence in a director (or leader of any kind) is important. It puts people at ease. It makes them feel like you know what you’re doing, which makes it easier for them to follow along. That’s really important on set, when time is money.

Who do you think exudes confidence? I’d love to know what you think. Use the comments section below to share your thoughts. Do tell!
