Elf (2003)
People rarely sit the fence when it comes to Will Ferrell’s comedies. He’s been promoting Anchorman 2 like whoa lately, so I’ve heard a lot of broad comments about his work. Folks seem to either hate it or love it. I’ve been a big fan for a long time so I fell in love with Elf immediately.
It doesn’t hurt that the movie is directed by Jon Favreau, another one of my Hollywood favorites. He was an improviser at iO Chicago so I’ve heard some fun stories about him, all of which made me love him even more. Even though I’ve never met the dude. I’m a big fan.
Elf has one of my favorite Christmas movies for so many reasons. I love comedies — especially ones that have subtle, sweet messages in them. Something that catches you by surprise, makes you feel something raw, allows you to tear up just a bit, and then makes you laugh again before the credits roll. That’s a tough thing to accomplish. And I appreciate when it’s done well.
Plus, this is a movie about being an outsider. Not quite fitting in. Then finding your way and learning what you can contribute to society to make the world a slightly better place. Often, just by being true to yourself. That’s nothing short of amazing.
Absurdity is a lot of fun, too. I’d love playing a character like Buddy because you get to do ridiculous things while wearing an awesome costume. Life is entirely too serious sometimes. Who doesn’t want to run through a revolving door repeatedly or hop across an intersection? I’d love to just ride up an escalator like that, just for kicks. Too fun!
There are plenty of other reasons why Elf has become a fave of mine this time of the year. Sure, a big part of it is silliness. But it’s a well-crafted, beautifully-told story, too. I just love it!
Hope you’re all enjoying the holidays, no matter what you celebrate. If it’s Christmas that you’re celebrating this time of year, then I hope you have a lovely Christmas Eve. Stay safe on the roads, y’all!
