Last weekend I watched the documentary film Dragon Girls at AFI Docs. This subtitled film is about young girls training at a kung fu school in China. They are seriously impressive young women: smart, strong, resilient, and incredibly fierce. I’m totally inspired by their tenacity and dedication. Watch the trailer below.
Here’s the description from AFI Docs:
This exuberant film tells the tale of three adolescent girls studying to become fighters at the largest kung fu academy in China. These three faces (among 26,000) spend every waking moment training, managing injuries and coping with the school’s intense (and often abusive) discipline policies. DRAGON GIRLS celebrates the athleticism of kung fu, explores the struggles of adolescence in an intensely controlled environment and reveals the troublesome practices involved in making fighters out of teenage girls. – ALH
I’m not sure how or where one could see this film, now that the festival is over. I’ll keep looking into it, though. It was a great documentary.
