The first day of a film festival is always full of energy. People are arriving, getting their passes, talking about the film’s they plan to see, and getting in the swing of things. The air is charged with excitement of what’s to come. It’s a fun day.

I saw a few films yesterday:

They were all wonderful films. Very different. About different subject matter. But all beautifully told documentaries. I really enjoyed each one.

Camera / Woman is about a named Khadija who lives with her family in Morocco and works as a wedding camerawoman. Her family treats her pretty terribly, giving her a hard time about working and staying out so late. It was maddening how hard she works to provide for her family and got nothing but grief from them in return. I overheard some other folks talking about how angry they were, too. I left feeling appreciative of my supportive family, a chance to earn a living doing work that I really enjoy, and some basic rights to be a strong, independent woman.

The Record Breaker is a short comedic documentary film about Ashrita Furman who sets world records — and faces the disapproval of his parents because he didn’t go to Harvard or become a lawyer. It’s a beautifully told story that kept me giggling. I absolutely loved it.

Battery Man is about a guy named Biba who has no salivary or sweat glands. He can withstand large amounts of electricity. It’s pretty wild. The film is about how he handles living with this phenomenon, how he tries to support his family doing appearances, and the impending doom of what happens when he can no longer perform.

Stories We Tell (@StoriesDocwas the last doc I saw of the day. It is about the stories families  tell. Sarah Polley explores the life of her mother, who died from cancer when Sarah was only 11 years old. I loved the interviews with family and friends because they all seem so candid and genuine. I was absolutely fascinated by this doc because of all the stories in my own family. This film made me think, laugh, and cry. Very well done.

Going to the fest this weekend?

Look for me. I’m the tall, awkward gal with glasses and brown hair. I’m @cammicam. You can also follow me on Instagram to see pics from the fest. I love a great convo. Be sure to say hi.
