My friend Todd is making a documentary titled Dispersed. It’s a film about fracking–the process used to extract natural gas from deep within the earth–as well as off-shore drilling.
Until Todd started working on the film, I had not heard the word fracking. Until he started posting stuff about it on Facebook (in relation to the film), I didn’t know the consequences of such a thing. And now I see that it is oh-so-similar to the consequences of coal mining. (Clean coal. Yeah, right.) It’s up to us to learn about the issues and figure out if we want to support these efforts or not.
The more I’ve learned, the more strongly I feel that fracking is a terrible idea. I called the governor twice to ask her to veto the bill.
I love North Carolina, my home state, and I don’t want to see it ruined by something like fracking. Our geography is one of the reasons my state makes me so happy: mountains, rolling hills, beautiful trees, sandhills, and all the way down to the tidewater and ocean front. I grew up watching the sun set over the Pamlico River, sailing in the Neuse River, hiking the trails in the mountains, and swimming at the beach. I’m nervous that the environment won’t be the same for my own children.
So today I’m feeling grateful for Todd, a hard worker committed to telling this story well. I’m looking forward to learning more about his film, and I hope it’ll bring about positive change.
Here’s more info:
“A Message From The Marcellus” is a short film created by Todd Tinkham and the “Dispersed” team to help stop fracking from becoming legal in North Carolina. The filmmakers traveled to PA and NY and LA interviewing people from all walks of life about the impacts of natural gas fracking on their communities. NC could learn a lot from the mistakes other states have already made.
We seem to be losing the fight against fracking right now, so we need your help. Please contact Gov. Perdue at (800) 662-7952. It takes less than a minute to call and leave a message with her assistant, telling the gov to veto senate bill S820, the fracking bill.
Also, you can learn a lot about fracking in a short time by attending one of our free screenings of “A Message From The Marcellus: What North Carolina Needs To Know About Fracking”. If you would like to host a free screening of “A Message From The Marcellus” near you, please contact Todd at toddtinkham@gmail.com.
